First aid for owners, not vet care

This is basic pet first aid for owners, not veterinary care. You’ll learn practical steps you can take in the first minutes of an emergency while getting professional help — it doesn’t replace your veterinarian, diagnosis, treatment, or emergency veterinary care. We’ll always show you where that line is.

Built with a local veterinarian

We’re building this the right way. We’re working with a local Pueblo veterinarian to develop and review the curriculum for clinical accuracy — an evidence-based, hands-on program grounded in the 2024 RECOVER Initiative guidelines, the current science behind veterinary CPR. Kim Glenn, RN, brings the hands-on teaching; the veterinary review keeps every module clinically sound.

Who this class is for

For dog and cat owners who want to be ready — no experience needed:

Dog and cat owners, new and lifelong

Multi-pet households and new puppy or kitten parents

Pet sitters, dog walkers, and groomers

Boarding, daycare, and rescue/shelter volunteers

Foster families and breeders

Anyone who wants to feel steadier and more useful in the first minutes of a pet emergency

What you’ll learn

Hands-on practice on dog and cat manikins, plus the judgment of when to act and when to head straight to the vet:

Pet CPR

Chest compressions and rescue breathing (mouth-to-snout) for dogs and cats, large and small

Choking & airway emergencies

Clearing a blocked airway, the modified Heimlich for pets

Bleeding & wounds

Direct pressure, bandaging a limb, and what not to do

Common emergencies

Shock, seizures, heatstroke (a real Pueblo-summer risk), and suspected poisoning (including the ASPCA hotline)

Checking your pet

Responsiveness, breathing, pulse, and gum color

When to go to the vet

Signs that mean it’s time to get veterinary help right away, and how to move an injured animal safely

You’ll leave with a Rescue Ready certificate of completion and a pet first-aid kit checklist to take home.

That bedside experience keeps the academy focused on training that works under pressure, not just on paper.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a certification?

You earn a Rescue Ready certificate of completion. Pet CPR isn’t certified the way human CPR is (there’s no AHA equivalent for pets), but the curriculum is being built on the 2024 RECOVER veterinary CPR guidelines and developed with veterinary review.

Do I need any medical or animal background?

No. It’s built for everyday pet owners, taught in plain language, with hands-on practice.

Is it for dogs, cats, or both?

Both. You’ll practice on dog and cat manikins and learn the differences between large dogs, small dogs, and cats.

Will this replace my vet?

No. This is basic pet first aid for the first minutes of an emergency, while you get professional help. It never replaces your veterinarian.

Where in Pueblo will classes be held?

In-person in Downtown Pueblo; the exact location goes out with the launch details to everyone on the interest list.

When does it start, and what will it cost?

We’re finalizing dates, pricing, and the veterinary collaboration now. Join the interest list to be first to know.

Can you teach a private class for my group or rescue?

Once we launch, yes — for rescues, shelters, breed clubs, daycares, and workplaces. Mention it when you join the list and we’ll keep you in mind.
